a couple of ponts:
To "rescue" the data, simply leave the disk in the original machine.
Burn PuppyLinux to a CD.
Boot from PuppyLinux which doesn't need your hard disk or win 7 or vista or anything.
With PuppyLinux, backup all data dear to his heart to a USB.
PuppyLinux is very easy to use and you will have no problems.

The Win 7 System Repair Disc is for Win 7 systems only.

If the system is 32 bit, then the system repair disc must be made on a 32 bit system.
If the system is 64 bit, then the system repair disc must be made on a 64 bit system.
WIN7 repair options work great on Vista.
You will need to use the command prompt.
Does your win7 repair cd go straight to recovery options - or is there a screen saying "Install Now"
At command prompt, mark vista partition active: e.g if it is D:
