Windows 7 Ultimate system restore has NEVER worked.

I have had two separate computers with two separate o/s systems using Windows 7 ultimate, one installed directly from discs, one upgraded from Windows Home Premium. The restore has never worked on either of them. Another friend who has the same system has the same problem. It does work (or at least, it worked one time) in Windows Home Premium. Does system restore not play well with Windows 7 Ultimate 32x & 64x? Last computer was Dell Dimensions 4600 with 2GB RAM, 2 TB harddrive Windows 7 Ultimate 32x . The 2nd is a Dell Inspiron 2320 all in one with 8 GB RAM & 2 TB harddrive WIndows 7 Ultimate 64x . Maybe it is just Dell doesn't play well with Windows 7 Ultimate 64x? It does creat restore points manually and also automatically. Each time you attempt restore it simply never completes and the system message is always the same, Unfornately I forget what it was ended in 009. Dell was actually on line with me and trying their best and saw the system message but still couldn't figure out why it wouldnt work. We removed ALL the anti virus, we turned off firewalls, we used safe mode, none of them worked.

My computer wouldn't start due to an email introduced virus, worm, trojan... whatever. Anyway as a last resort I had to try to start it by doing a "Restore to Manufacturers Settings". That hasn't worked as it tells me it hasn't managed to restore Windows to where it can run! It's now telling me to try the restore again but I can't get back to the options page Where the command was initiated from in the first place. Can I initiate it from a Dos command?

Oh for the good old days when Windows were just for looking through and Apples simply grew on trees!

Two reasons I know restore doesn't work

You cannot restore your computer to any point in time PRIOR to a defrag. And some security programs will defrag your computer periodically automatically. Your restore won't work after a defrag until you creat new restore points.
We finally got my restore working after a TOTAL reinstall and we got the backup working after I got an external hard drive that has NO built in programs or backup or anything. Totally empty brand new. Nothing on it. That worked.

This is not correct (at least in my experience). Have over time done dozens of successful restores after defrag, on several systems, even very old restore points with many defrags in between works fine, xp & w7.

(About the specific restore problem on the laptop I mention in my post above, will investigate a little more and probably create a new topic asking for some hints)
