Windows 7: Restoring from System Image: "One of the backup files is corrupted"

Restoring from System Image: "One of the backup files is corrupted"

OS: Win 7 x64, SP1

My main Windows 7 installation was infected by a virus/rootkit that was wreaking havoc on my system. System Restore would not work.

I had a Windows 7 System Image backed up saved to an external drive previously, so after I removed the virus, I decided to do a full restore from that one using a repair disc.

After running for a minute or two, I got this message : "The system image restore failed. Error Details: One of the backup files is corrupted (0x8078002C)".

So I can not restore from the backup I had saved. To make matters worse, the Restore process already started wiping out my Windows 7 install before it checked the Restore image for corruption, because now I can't even boot - "BOOTMGR is missing". Startup repair doesn't even detect an OS now.

1) Is this the way it usually works? During an image restore, Win 7 starts wiping out the old installation before it verifies that the restore image is even useable?

2) Is there any way to "repair" the System Image I have?

3) If not, is there any way to restore the installation that was wiped (partially) by initiating the Image Restore?

I realize that I can mount the VHD from the restore to recover some of the files, but only after having to do a fresh install - which begs the question: what the hell is the point of a Windows System Image backup in the first place, if it can't check for errors before wiping your system and leaving you screwed?

I am BEYOND frustrated at this point and any help would be greatly appreciated.
