restore to new hard drive

I image Win 7 to acronis and wondered if I could restore an image to a new hard drive from the exterior hard drive?
If so, are there any things to do to help this along?
Thank you

It would depend on if acronis is able to get ride of hardware dependencies. If it doesn't you will get a BSOD when you bootup the new pc.

According to the site for true image 13 you can.

Quote:
True Image 2013 Plus Pack is here to make your hardware migration as easy as a click of your mouse. No matter what the make, model or installed components of your computer, easily restore files, programs, or your entire system to different hardware, dynamic disks, and even Microsoft Windows Pre-installation Environments (WinPE).

Add Plus Pack to your True Image software for the ultimate in data protection and management.
I have never used the software so i can not confirm how this well it actually works.

If it is a new HDD on the same PC then YES. Other imaging software - Windows inbuilt, (free or bought) Macrium Reflect will do the same. It involves just an image restore.
You will also need to:
1) Restore the system reserved partition if you have one
2) Accept MBR replacement if given the option
3) Using Windows inbuilt imaging and free Macrium restore to a HDD at least the same size as the original
3) Restore with only the new HDD connected to avoid possible problems.

With regards to using Acronis for the restore..

You do not need to purchase the plus pack to do this restore if all you wish to do is restore the image to a new HDD on the same machine.

Hopefully the image you took was of the full hard drive (including mbr, partitions etc.) and not just an individual partition.

In that case, just fit the new replacement drive and boot from the Acronis Boot CD with your external drive containing the image to be restored.

When booted up, choose the restore option and browse for the image on the external HDD you wish to restore.

Your OS partition is the most important to have imaged and be able to have an operating PC with a new HDD. With relatively large HDDs 1TB, 2+TB, I recommend a more flexible backup strategy than imaging alone. Relatively static data on separate partitions can be backed up in different ways.

backup for new hard drive

Ashleyg - I understand that I can restore my backup to a new hard drive as long as I have included the entire disc not just a partition which i do. The first box is checked which entails all.
Thank you

MJF - At my rated average level of skill I do not understand the idea of a more flexible strategy unless you are referring to cloud or online backups.
I have a 2 TB for one pc and a 1TB for the other.
Thank you, also.
