unable to complete a restore with back up disks/advice

hi guys any help greatly appreciated.
i have an advent roma laptop running win 7 home 32bit that has some issues.
it keeps getting stuck on system repair for hours on end without any result.
i have tried running chkdsk.it gets as far as 50% then hangs like sys repair.at the point when it stops is at stage 2 of 3 and it is correcting errors in index. it hangs for hours and no result like system repair.both the system repair and the chkdsk scans i have let run for more than a day each before i stopped them.
i have tried scannow and that does work but wont complete as it says it cannot due to a sys repair pending and telling me to exit and restart.at this point the laptop freezes again.
wiping this laptop isnt a problem as its a spare one the kids use and there isnt anything important saved on it.
i cannot access the reinstall options in recovery as it just hangs again.i have tried to access them by using the back up dvd's made at the time of purchase and a recently made repair disk(1st in boot order) but no luck.every time i try to access the reinstall options it just freezes using both methods.
in the bios i can see my hdd which is in sata port 1 [toshiba mk1655gsx s1] and sata port 2 {tsstcorp cddvdw ts-l633a-].
in the advanced recovery options through notepad i can see my computer where it shows the drives attached.it shows 3 drives, sys c 4.27gb free of 9.27gb. boot x 31.1mb free of 33.5mb and local disk d which has no info.
is the drive fried? or could it be saved by doing a clean install?. i dont have the installation disk but i do have the product key and a downloaded iso that i can burn.
it might just be that i have to bring it to a shop but i do enjoy learning this stuff and this site has an unbelievable wealth of knowledge available and i have already learned some great stuff in the few days since i found this site.
    thanks in advance.
