If you have "system" files on any drive besides the C the Win 7 backup will also attempt to back up that drive.
If you had system backup checked when you tried to back up the D, same deal.
If none of that applies, I suggest trying out the free Macrium Reflect
See whs's article and get his Macrium WinPE ISO. It works.
A quick google of that error tells me you may be better off taking that easy path.
