From the Dell - Support link in my first post:
Quote:

Dell Customers can now request a set of backup discs containing the factory-installed operating system as well as the device drivers and utilities specific to your system.
- Requests are limited to one (1) set of backup discs per system purchased.
- The backup discs requested must match the operating system that was factory installed on the original order.
These disks are free. The 100 you were quoted for repair service does not apply. If you contact Dell just ask them for the recovery disks for your computer. Don't even mention the word "repair" because they won't hear anything else you have to say.

are the drivers not in the recovery partition, installing the correct drivers should give you the softwares etc that were on your pc originally.

Julian, in order to invoke the factory reset from the recovery partition, the 100MB System Reserved Partition needs to be the original one - since he installed an MSDN Windows 7 Professional over the top of the Dell OEM installation, it would appear that this functionality was lost.

The only way forward, if Dell will not ship disks, is a clean OEM install.

ok, i was thinking that the partition that was the dell recovery would still be there
so do you mean when the op installed 7 it overwrote the dell recovery partition
my thinking was that the recovery partition was there and that the op cant do a factory restore as the dell recovery suite software isnt installed, but if he gets that installed then he theoretically could access the recovery from the suite .
providing it is still there.

failing that if the drivers are in the 17 Gb partition then he should be able to install those to get the dell softwares that were on it to start with.

or get them from dell drivers pages for his specific pc.

when i clean installed our lappy as it wouldnt factory restore, i got all the driver /softwares from lenovo support site, it took a little finding but its all fine now.

ps ,i see what you mean about the 100Mb colin.
its a simple driver problem then really as installing all the drivers should make it the same as it was when the op got it ,except the dell recovery suite wont work,

but will he be able to create a set of current recovery discs?
