Does Win 7 back up a functional set of applications (programs)?

    Win 7 Back reads:

Windows Backup won't back up the following items:
    • Program files (files that define themselves as part of a program in the registry when the program is installed).
Does that mean that the applications contained in the folder Program files will not be backed up ready for a restore when there is a system crash?

I want to make a system image for restoring my operating system which will be located on C with applications.

    Hi,

I'm not sure about Windows Backup, but I guarantee that Macrium will do exactly what you want. We have a fine tutorial for that too:

    Imaging with free Macrium

I have personally used this method in over 7 separate installations for friends and colleagues and have yet to encounter one that doesn't work.

    Hi Golden,
    Thanks for your reply.
    The Macrium software looks OK.
Where would you recommend I install the Windows Automated Kit that is required to make a "restore" function successfully. C Program Files (where the operating system is located) or on a separate hard drive to the operating system.

    Hi,

I'll save you the trouble of downloading WAIK. Download this pre-made WinPE - burn it to a USB using YUMI or similar, and then boot from it to create and/or restore Macrium images. Its all you need.

Its free of malware, but do scan it for your own peace of mind.

To answer your question on backup. That statement refers to the File and Folder backup. The imaging component will back up everything on the partitions you image. It's a bit confusing but Windows, by default, does both in a scheduled backup. I would agree with Golden however that Macrium is a better choice for imaging.

OK Thanks. I had already downloaded Macrium 5.0, installed and created a back up image of PartitionC before I found this reply.

Can I still use the WinPE you sent to recover my computer using the backup image I have already created with Macrium 5.0?

Its free of malware, but do scan it for your own peace of mind.
