By default, Windows 7 creates one restore point every seven days or before significant system events such as a program or driver installation, some Windows Updates, etc.

It also depends on how much disk space you have set aside as to how many individual restore points will be saved.

Since restore points serve a very limited function, I usually keep 3-4 at any given time. I rely more on system images to return my computer to a working condition. So depending on how large your hard drive is and how many restore points you feel comfortable keeping, this is a purely personal decision. :)

    Hello themaverick,

It depends on what you have the maximum storage space for restore points is set to.
With that said, Windows doesn't always create a restore point, so it would be best for you to manually create one before making any changes to the system to be able to undo them if needed.
    Hope this helps, :)

LOL, looks like Lee and I are thinking the same. :)

A month ago my PC wouldn't start and I had no restore pouints at all and had to reinstall windows which was hours of work getting everything back. Surely theres a way of automatically setting one every other day or similar?

Great news. If you like, you could use the tutorial below to make creating restore points as needed easier to do.
