Windows backup no longer working: Error 0x8007045D

Hello everyone,

Title says it all. Backup keeps giving me this error now out of the blue 0x8007045D "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I've done the disk check (finally) and it came back clean. I've tried the shrink volume tactic as well, which of course didn't work. So once again i'm stuck. I'm starting to think windows 7 doesn't like me lol

I'm trying to do this back up on an HP 500gb external drive

Were you able to perform backups before to that same 500GB external drive? If yes, it's possible that you might have some damaged or corrupt system files. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

Yes I was able to before. Doing the scan now

Update: Ive attempted the scan, but it stops at 43% during the verification phase saying "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"

Update 2: I decided to read the sfc page again, and this time I ran the sfc /verifyonly.. that actually finished and came back with "Windows resource protection found integrity violations" I cant access the log in which it pointed me to though.

Option Three in the system file checker tutorial outlines how to see and read the cbs.log and hopefully determine which file(s) and damaged or corrupt. It's a fairly involved and time consuming process. It may likely require the skills of an analyst who can decipher the log. I am not one of those people.

When I've been faced with a system file checker scan that can't finish, I've jumped straight to a Repair Install. A repair install will attempt to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers etc. If successful you'll have to reinstall Windows Updates. The repair install takes about an hours and reinstalling the updates may take slightly longer.
