So im trying to create a image backup onto some DVD+R which are 4.7GB in size, so far I have used 4 and my loading bar (green % bar) on the image restore application is only at about 1/8th. It is trying to copy 496GB onto the disk, how may more am I suppose to use? does the bar suddenly skip forward to completion?
Note: When I put a new disk it a message box comes up saying that I need to format each disk.

That is a pretty large backup to use DVD's, you should really invest in an external hard drive.
DVD's are not a reliable backup method, you are going to need a lot of DVD's and they don't always restore successfully.
Ahh, I thought it might be. I dont want to just waste these 4 disks though. Can I wipe them without damaging anything?
Also I have a Hewlett-Packard (HP) computer and when I go to selecting what drive to copy an Image backup it has the System (C:) where my OS is, but I also have a HP_RECOVERY (D:) System drive. I have no clue what this is, I think it may be the HP drivers and settings. But im getting a new motherboard soon so I dont really want it or need it (I think). What should I do?

Well, unless those DVD's are re-writable, (DVD-RW) they are single use when it comes to burning, be glad it's not a stack of 50 or even more.
If they are DVD-RW you can just right click on them in explorer and click erase or format.
You can do with out the recovery, I do have a question though, since you are changing your motherboard, your current OEM version will no longer be valid on the new mobo, do you plan on buying a new license of win 7?
Ahhhhh man, I forgot about that.... Yeah im probably going to look at Windows 8 though, Getting Windows 7 is going to cost far too much for me.

You can do that too, it's an upgrade for what ever OS you had previously.

Okay, do you think the best way to do it would be getting a hard disk copy of Windows 8 and then installing it on my new mobo? or would that cost a lot more?
Well, you can make your own install disc from the upgrade assistant following this tutorial,
Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create

The upgrade would keep most of your programs and files intact, the clean install would be just that, clean, you would need to reinstall your programs and backup your data so you can import it back.
Actually, either method it is always wise to backup first. You will be doing yourself a BIG favor investing in an external hard drive.
I think I am going to have to get a hard disk copy of the Windows 8 upgrade so that when I get my new motherboard I can just install it. I cant really afford a new HDD right now so if I done the upgrade to Windows 8 I would have to use loads of disks to transfer it which isnt something I want to do.
