Backing up on DVD - no way. My images are 25GB on average. You imagine the mess with DVDs. Plus I do that 3 times per week. Do I need images that are 12 years old ??

For a limited number of precious documents and very special photos you should backup to multiple sources and a drag & drop to some DVDs is ok for one of the sources (as far as I'm concerned). Even then you may want archive quality DVDs ($$).
But for general backup and system imaging I would recommend ext HDDs preferably USB3 for speed. I use 2 ext HDDs in case one fails.
