System restore hangs on initialising / mouse not working

    Hi, I have two problems.
It started when my mouse stopped working - wont move the cursor, altho right and left click work. Both wired and wireless, altho the wireless sometimes works if I switch it off then back on again, but not for long. Both types of mouse work on other computers in the house. Plugging into a different USB slot doesn't make a difference. Searched online for solutions. Uninstalled mouse in device manager. Cleared USB tree. Restarted computer which found mouse and reinstalled. Mouse still not working, altho properties say 'this device is working properly'. Still same problem. If I move the cursor with the touchpad I can click with the mouse.
So, I thought system restore might help, but it hangs on 'initialising' forever. Again, searched for solutions. Have done scandisk and scannow - reported back no problems. Volume shadow copy is set to manual - changed it to automatic but made no difference. Tried msconfig - hide all microsoft - disable the rest = no difference. Tried system restore in safe mode - still hangs.
    Dell inspiron 5720
Installed memory (RAM) 6.00GB (5.86GB usable)
    64-bit OS
Wiindows 7 home premium service pack 1
    Thank you for reading.

    Update
I think mouse problem is resolved. Wireless mouse - new battery. USB wired mouse now not recognised or working on other computer - think it's probably had it.
    Still have system restore issue.

    Hi SheilaB,

You may try a different 'System Restore Point' to see if that works. If you are unable to access 'Windows', you may try 'System Restore' from the 'Recovery Environment'. Refer to the following steps:
    - Power on the computer > At 'Dell splash screen' repeatedly tap 'F8 key' > Select 'Repair your computer' and tap 'Enter' > Enter 'Username / Password' and tap 'Enter' > All 'System Recovery Options' will be listed (You may select 'System Restore')

You may also want to run 'Hardware Diagnostics' to check the 'Hardware functionality': http://dell.to/OUGnqT
If the 'Hardware Diagnostics' pass successfully, it will point at a possible 'software issue' and other 'restore / repair options' can be tried in that case.

Do reply with the findings; would be glad to assist.

Hi Saurabh A, thank you for replying. I have followed the instructions in your first paragraph. System restore worked right through to the end, leaving a message, which I have attached.

I then followed the instructions in the last paragraph, and the diagnostics reported all OK.

I then rebooted into 'normal' set up, and the system restore message was there saying it had not completed successfully, so I started it again. Sadly, the same problem persists where by it 'hangs' on initializing.

    Hi SheilaB,

Hope that you attempted 'System Restore' using a different 'restore point'. The 'Restore Point' that you used previously may not have been 'healthy'; therefore did not lead to restore completion. If you are unsure about it, you may attempt 'System Restore' again using another 'Restore Point'.

Glad that the 'Hardware Diagnostics' passed; 'hardware' looks good.

Please share if the system allows you to boot to 'Safe Mode'. If yes, please keep a 'back up' of all personal data on an external media.

Do reply with the results; will take it forward.

    Hi again
I did use a different restore point, altho there's only one 'automatic' restore point and one 'critical update' to choose from.
The computer will boot in safe mode.

    Hi SheilaB,

The available 'System Restore' point may be damaged or corrupt, due to which 'Restore' is not completing. Please share if you are still facing any other issues with the notebook. You mentioned in the original post that 'Scandisk & SFC scan results' look normal.

If you'e not facing any trouble at the moment, you may want to create a new 'System Restore Point' at this time: System Restore Point - Create
A newly created 'Restore point' is likely to be healthy and should facilitate a successful restore, if needed in future.

Do reply if you have any further questions; would be glad to assist.
