want to backup a Dual boot windows 7/windows 7 machine

HI ,

I have a dual boot machine running two copies of windows 7 home premium 64bit.

One is used for Audio work and the other is for general use, both partitions are on the same disk (1TB)

The Audio OS has a C: and a D: , the General OS just has a C:

I used EasyBCD when I did the initial install to allow me to choose what to boot to.

what I would like to do is make a backup of either one or both partitions in case of hard drive failure.

The Audio OS is the most important , so if I can get a backup for that I will sleep better.

I have a 1TB external USB drive waiting to go.

Is this something that windows7 backup can do ? , im terrified of running any software that is going to cause any problems with my current setup ( I should of done this after the install).

would it be ok to run the windows 7 backup program seperately from each OS ?, or would it be better to do it another way?.

Hello Jack, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could create a system image backup of both to the 1TB external drive. This is a built-in feature included in Windows. You would then be able to do a system image recovery with it whenever needed to restore everything to how it was when the image was created.

There's no need to create one separately in each OS. You can create a system image from within either Windows for both.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok, thanks,

So I would have to select the D: partition as an extra partition to be backed up?

does it matter which OS you run it from ?, does it need to be the one that I ran the easybcd tool from?

can I also use this back to recover at file level? , or is it just an image?

It doesn't matter which OS you create the system image from, but you would need to select both (if not already by default) to have both included.

Normally a system image is used to restore the image only, but you could use the tutorial below to manually extract files from a created system image if needed.
