I have XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and this will back them all up. Windows 7 backup is crap because it wants to back up the entire hard drive not counting other things it won't do. I'm a retired Computer Pro but I cannot see getting anything except the home version. I got Vista Ultimate and that was a waste and I don't want to make the same mistake again because of my ego.
I have used Acronis Home for several years. V11, V12 and now 2010. They all work great. The only issue that I have encountered is that V11 wouldn't recognize V12 and V12 won't recognize V13(2010). Be sure that you have the current recovery CD for each version before you have to recover.
What's the oldest version of ATI that will create system images on Windows 7? I'm assuming the versions that support Vista will? I ordered a new HDD for an older laptop which has a 40 GB HDD. I plan to create an image of the current drive and drop it onto the new drive.
I've upgraded to all the new versions since 8, I have not yet upgraded to 2010.
I'm a long time user also. 2010 is a worthwhile upgrade imo. They've introduced a lot of new features and made the old ones work more reliably, afaict so far. 2010 happens to be in the process of making an incremental compressed system image backup of my system as I type this.
But to the OP, what does getting the home version of 7 have to do with windows backup? The home version has it also. It just doesn't back up to network drives in the home version.
But I agree with you that ATIH is the best way to go (for a paid option) and also that for most people, getting Ultimate (if you have to pay for it) is a waste of money. And anyway, most of the extra features in ultimate can be accomplished with 3rd party apps. The only reason I have Ultimate is that I got it for free. Otherwise, I would be a happy Pro user (with the $30 .edu email address order option).

Home Version 7 does not have automatic backups and that is why I'm getting a third party backup. The last time I tried to backup my Windows 7 it wanted to backup my entire hard drive and I don't need a half a terabyte backup everytime I back up my C drive.
