How do I create a system image of Windows and custom settings?

I just installed Windows 7 and finally got all my programs/games and everything set up the way I like. Now I'm wondering how can I create a system image of my entire Windows 7, including all programs/games and custom settings? So that way if I ever have to do a format, I can just install using the image and everything will be set up to go.

I may have read wrong, but I read creating a system image through the Back Up & Restore > Create system image only creates the necessary files for Windows to run, not any programs/settings? I just want to be sure before I continue.

Also additional questions I wanted to ask, when I create system image, could I deselect what areas to exclude from back up? For example I have movies stored in My Documents and not necessary to back those up.

And if I need to, how do I restore using the system image?

All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Ech0es,

There are two types of backups in Windows.
  1. System Image - Whole system, and any selected drives.
  2. Windows Backup - Only selected folders and their contents. You also have the option to do this on an automated schedule with the option of also including a system image.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for the reply. That helps. So if I were to create a system image backup, I guess I would have to remove the movies from My Documents to my external drive so they won't be included?

You're welcome.

Yes, anything that you do not want to be included in the system image will need to be first moved to a drive that is not selected to be included in the image.
