Easiest way to create a system image ?

I have a laptop and a PC both have Windows 7 Professional installed. On my laptop I need at least "77 GB" of space to create a system image, and on my PC I need nearly "100 GB". What is the easiest way to accomplish this? I don't trust CDs/DVDs very much. I do have a 500gb external hard drive. Is there a way to partition it so I can have a system image from both PC and Laptop on it ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

You don`t really have to partition, as long as you know which backup goes to which machine. But partitioning is an option.

And aren`t you using windows built in imaging ?

Check this Tutorial using Macrium Reflex a free and very good imaging software.

    Imaging with free Macrium

It saves the image as a file and is compressed to about 60% of the original and just save to your external drive. No need for separate partitions as the images are just files.
