Can't open system recovery?

Ok a few more things need to be tried.


Rest CMOS

• Option 1:
  
  • Remove all power sources (AC and Battery) from the machine
  • Press and HOLD the power button for 2 full minutes
  • Attach AC power only
  • Enter BIOS when you boot
    
    • Reset to defaults
    • exit Saving changes
  • Post what happens
• Option 2:
  
  • Remove all power sources (AC and Battery) from the machine
  • See Service manual for removing CMOS (RTC) battery: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01988326.pdf
    
    • Always follow safety guidelines in section 4
  • After 2 hours replace same battery in machine
  • Attach AC power only
  • Enter BIOS when you boot
    
    • Reset to defaults
    • exit Saving changes
  • Post what happens

If those didn't help then it's back to BIOS: EFI disk diags

Post what the advanced disk tests tell you. I don't expect them to be much different from the std diags, but it might tell you something more.

I think the next step is to surrender and buy a new drive. Contact HP and tell them you didn't create the Recovery media for the 1071 before the drive crashed - they're usually lenient in this case, but they might charge you for the Flash drive - make sure they understand that you don't have an optical drive.

You might consider getting an enclosure (~$15) for your old drive to see if you can recover any data.

Is this your 1010 mini or your main workstation recovery drive?

I woke up from a nap and this popped into my mind, not sure if it will work or not: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download It will depend on how much activity you have had since it happened.

Two reasons:
1) it will make diagnosis of the drive far easier when it is hooked up to a working machine
2) you might be able to copy your data off the drive onto the working machine.

Just make sure your working machine has running AV program and it the virus definitions are up-to-date before you attach this drive to another machine.

Post an update on the previous suggestions (CMOS, reset BIOS, EFI diags)

Also post a new PartWiz snapshot of the 1071.

There are a few other utilities that might need to be run to fix the boot, BCD, and probably the registry hives but previous attempts to use similar utilities failed with no disk drive.

Boot 1071 with PartWiz
Make 199 MB partition INactive

Given that you loaded defaults in BIOS and the disk tests fail in BIOS, I'd say the drive is shot.

The data might be recoverable, but not this way.

The NTLDR error is because the System Reserve partition was delete, created, and the MBR was rebuilt... but the remainder of the restoration could not be accomplished due to the disk error.

Changing the active partition to the 'boot' partition resulted in the disk error.

I think the best thing at this point is to get the 2.5 enclosure and try to grab your data off the drive.

Again, make sure that you have a runtime AV pgm on the machine you are going to use to hold the backup from the 1071 drive. I would run a full AV regiment on that machine (main PC or 1010 whichever) as soon as the 1071 drive is attached.

Once the drive is on a working machine and deemed virus free and the data is safe, we can investigate further.

But there's little hope that the 1071 drive will be reliable.

This puts the 1071 drive into an external enclosure so that you can attach it to another machine and attempt to get your data.

Having the 1TB external drive is good news, but first you have to be able to access the data on the 1071 drive.

Using PartWiz, you could try to copy the 'c:" partition off the 1071 onto the 1TB external.
Copy Partition help of magic partition manager - Partition Wizard.
You could also copy d: (Recovery) and e: (HP_TOOLS)

If your data is safe (1TB external drive has a new partition with a mirror of the 1071 "c:" partition.

   Warning

Shut down the 1071
Disconnect the 1TB external.

Sorry, but what exactly does this do? I have a 1TB external hard drive if I can use it. If not, I don't have a problem buying one of these.
