Bootable Backup Image (vhd) - Possible?

Is this possible? I know that you can boot from an image (using bcdedit), but I haven't been able to make it work with my Windows 7 backup image.

I'm probably missing something key / obvious as to why it wouldn't work, but that's where you handy people come in.

Thanks,
Scott
