You might try a Repair Install

It works quite well to fix those unfixable problems which are about to drive you to reinstalling. Next best thing.

For example, yesterday I set up a second user account on my computer for a friend to use while I am traveling. When I got back to my desktop, my sticky notes "To Do' list had disappeared and wouldn't start. My task bar was also emptied of all programs.

I popped in my DVD, ran a Repair install and an hour later everything was back in place, including the "To Do" list.

    Wonderful cross-dependencies

In Services, check the dependencies tab for the Windows Backup Service.... a tree of three more services are required: Remote procedure call (RPC), DCOM Server Process Launcher, and RPC Endpoint Mapper. https://www.sevenforums.com/images/sm...ion-14.gifWhat a bother! About Windows 98, I learned to use a third party backup because Microsoft usually contracts for the backup program using different vendors using incompatible file formats from one Windows version to the next. If it weren't needed to have restore points----------hey those can be done third party too!
