So I created a system image a while ago via windows backup on my external HDD. It just so happs that I need to restore now.
i tried to do it in CP and got to where i could select the drive and begin the restore process. However I was not able to check the first option to wipe the drive then install. So I just clicked next. It went to the second screen and basically didn't move for. But it froze after 20mins. I canceled it and windows wouldn't boot. I formatted the HDD and reinstalled windows and now rrying the restore again and same issue. It just kinda freezes. There is no HDD activity either.

How can I restore from my system image?

    Hello Patrick,

If you are unable to do a System Image Recovery at boot using step 3 in the STEP TWO section below,.....
...then you might see if you may be able to using the method in the tutorial below.
    Hope this helps, :)

A little. I just don't understand why it won't restore it. It sees it and all but freezes on the restore.

You could extract what you want from a system image to copy back, but you will not be able to restore services. They'll have to be manually set again.

System Image - Extract Files Using Disk Management

    OR

System Image - Extracting Files from using Virtual PC

As Brink says, you should be doing this from bootup with your W7 dvd, not from within windows. You can`t do it from within windows.

As you said you are trying to do it in Control Panel
