In Startup and Recovery; if you have "Automatically restart" unchecked, and "Write an event to the system log" is checked, then your machine shouldn't be restarting on it's own and not writing any event either. This behavior might indicate a hardware problem like the CPU overheating or a stick of bad RAM, rather than a malicious process. Although, because of the way they hook the API, certain boot sector viruses and rootkits are fully capable of shutting down a machine without Windows having a clue as to what just happened.

I've no reason to believe this 7yr old Medion has any hardware issues or rootkits. It's always been remarkably stable right up to and including the full wipe and reinstall of Win 7 Ult that I initiated a few days ago.

I'm currently restoring my pre-Grub Acronis image in full - MBR, System Reserved and Windows partitions, and then I'm going to install Grub4DOS, load up my bootable ISOs, have a working system once again (hopefully anyway!!) and forget all about these issues for the time being.
