MIssing dll file STString64.dll
I seem to be missing the dll file "STString64.dll". A hijackthis check found several missing files (although I'm not sure why since I found most of them). The one I have a question about is the missing file for vssvc.exe. I performed a search for that and found it and tried to run it (as administrator). I received a system error saying "The program can't start because STString64.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
I should mention here that I have never been able to perform a system restore on this laptop since I've owned it (nearly five years). I have tried various fixes, none of which have worked.
When I performed a search for the alleged missing dll file, I got 3 hits but one of them was "STString64d.dll" Is this correct? does everyone else have this file with an extra "d" in the filename? I'd thought of renaming it but decided to wait and see if it's a normal thing.
This file with the extra "d" and another STString64.dll (without the extra "d") is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\IsoPart\windows\system32". The other hit was found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup.
Also, although I found these files in windows explorer, they are not found in the registry. Shouldn't it be found somewhere in the registry? I'm curious as to why they are not located in the windows\system 32 file (apart from the Dell backup files).
I have a windows 7 disc - is it possible to extract this dll file from that disc (or alternatively, the vssvc.exe program), and would that help?
Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
