Restore from system backup on old PC

If I install a fresh copy of Win 7 on a PC with a different hardware configuration, can I restore the last system backup from my old PC, bearing in mind that different motherboards are involved? I want to avoid reinstalling loads of application software.

Possibly, but more likely, not. The backup will include driver information from the original motherboard -- and if those devices are quite different for the new motherboard, Win7 might not even boot.

Most folks will recommend a fresh install on the new motherboard -- and that is generally, the best course of action.

IF you don't want to follow that route, LapLink makes a product known as PC Mover -- which will "migrate" your Win7 OS setup from the old machine to the new one. I have used it, and it actually works. Saves having to reinstall all the apps from scratch, and redo all the Windows updates to make Win7 current.

Thanks for the reply. The PC Mover option looks promising, and I'll follow that route. If it saves reinstalling all the Adobe CS6 products, it will be worth the cost.

Once I read articles about your thread. If your computer doesn't have many important things or your computer is new. Fresh install is a good choice. Otherwise, backup & restore, clone , migrate to OS is good choice. My tool, aomei backupper, a freeware. and I have done backup with it several times. It also supports clone.

I have a very large number of apps, costing thousands of dollars. PC Mover, which I've bought, looks promising, even if it doesn't copy everything when I eventually use it.
