System Restore

Good day to all.
Some time ago I decided to fit a new SSD on my windows 7 home premium,It took a little while to do the job as WHS on this forum led me all the way through the process.It all went well in the end.
Now this morning I had a slight hitch with the computer so I decided to go for a ''System Restore'' well I was shocked to find out that the system was set to off,So there was no later date that I could go back to.
Reading up on google I noticed that if there is a SSD fitted you don't have the option for a system restore to an earlier time,I found that method very handy sometimes if there was a small problem with the computer.
So now what would be the best option for this system as google info says that with an SSD system restore should be set to off.
If I had another occasion that I needed to revert back to a day or so,What would I be able to do.Is there any way around this for future reference.??.
Or am I up against the wall if I need to go back to an earlier date?.

Hello David,

Yes, you could turn system protection on with SSDs if you like, and have the free space for it. :)

Not sure I am following you on this. Either Google is wrong or you misunderstood it.

System Restore works fine with SSDs. I've used it myself many times.

and have the free space for it

Thanks Brink,If I did turn it on.Can you Please explain about having free space for it?.
I have a 12GB SSD and the amount on it is the operating system and programs,total of 49.5GB
Can you be a little more clearer in my simple method as I'm not very techy.If I did turn it on would I be able to get back to an earlier date i.e 3 days ago?

Sorry ignatzatsonic,I was typing my last when your reply came through.

You can adjust the amount of space devoted to System Restore. I use 10 percent of my drive, which equates to 7.45 GB and that's good for at least a dozen restore points, dating back at least a month. Try 8 or 10 GB and see how it works for you.

David,

Did you have plans for the 20.25 GB unallocated space on Disk 0?

If not, then you could extend C into it to add all the space back to C: for one bigger SSD.

I'm not sure I follow your question, but............

Right now, my most recent restore point is from April 24.

You can manually make a restore point any time you want to.

I almost never do that.

In spite of that, right now I have a dozen restore points, dating as far back as early April.

It turns out that Windows makes restore points without being asked. Like whenever you run Windows Update.

Not sure how often, but I think it may make one every so often (weekly?) even if you don't run Windows Update.

I'd suggest you set it to 10% of your drive. That would allot about 11 GB, which should be good for at least a dozen restore points.

Take a look at how many restore points you have every week or so. If they aren't frequent enough to suit you, just make one manually.

Went and turned it on and this I set it to,Does it look okay??

Looks good David. The "Current Usage" size will increase as restore points are created.
