Can't backup - Invalid window handle (Error code: 0x80070578)

On a Windows 7 laptop, I noticed that Windows Backup hadn't backed up anything in about a year since the USB drive it was backing up to was full. (I thought Windows 7 would delete old backups if the backup drive was full, but that's another issue.)

So I deleted all the backups off the USB drive and told Windows 7 to do a backup. But the backup failed with an "Invalid window handle" error (error code: 0x80070578). It gave me options to "Try to run backup again" and "Change backup settings". I tried both options and re-tried the backup, but the backup kept failing with the "Invalid window handle" error. I also re-formatted the USB drive (as NTFS) and also restarted Windows, and the backup still fails with the same "Invalid window handle" error.

Any idea how to fix this?

Format the drive in computer. Then go into backup and restore. Click change settings and wait for windows backup to start. Click the drive again and follow the prompts.

By the way, action center will alert you if the backup fails due to lack of space.

I just tried all that and unfortunately the backup still failed with the "Invalid window handle" error.

Method 1: Verify the Volume Shadow Copy and Windows backup service is started. If it has not started, start the service and check. Follow these steps:

    a) Click Start, type “services” on the start search box and press enter.
    b) Scroll down and check for the service mentioned above (Volume Shadow Copy and Windows backup).
    c) Double click each of the services and start them if they have not started. Click ok.

Method 2: Run the System File Checker(SFC) scan to fix any corrupted files.

Please Run sfc /scan now using option 2 in this tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Please post back the results.

I got a "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    I attached my sfcdetails.txt file.
