Their are some 3rd party defrag programs that will make Windows 7 restore points disappear.

Thanks for the response. After a few days without any comments I was beginning to believe nothing would be forthcoming, especially after adding my computer specs. What seems odd is that the workaround was created and published by Microsoft, and yet it doesn't work for me and seemingly others judging by the numerous postings that it doesn't work.

If Brinks suggestion.

System Restore Points - Stop XP Dual Boot Delete

and you are not using a 3rd party defrag program I really don't know what the problem is.

In you post #4 you left the impression you didn't care to go any farther fixing this problem. I'm assuming that could be the reason posts stopped.

I did write that I would use a different method to restore the system. Have not yet decided on which program to use to perform the creation of a disk image. It appears that each program has issues, according to the postings on this forum.

However, based on the comment that there may be another reason for the workaround not working, I became curious in learning what that might be. No, I do not use a 3rd party defrag program. Additionally, when asked to post the specs of the computer, I thought there might be a solution. By the way, I did make the workaround changes in the registry again to determine if another attempt might work. It didn't.

I know very little about a dual boot but.
What are you doing in XP when you notice you loose the restore points in Windows 7.
Are you using raid in any fashion? I know that sounds crazy.
Are you sharing anything between XP and W7?

Restore Points in Win7 Saved

This is an update to a previous thread about the workaround that prevents restore points from being deleted with a dual boot system having Win XP and Win7 installed on two separate hard drives. As noted previously, restore points were being deleted in Win7 after booting up in XP. After making the changes to the registry as described in the "workaround" posted elsewhere in this forum, it failed to work. A last and third attempt proved to be successful. To dispense with the notion that the first two attempts performing the changes to the registry were probably done incorrectly, they were not.

The bottomline is that restore points are now being preserved in Win7, and a thank you is in order for the "workaround".
