How to make an image of a Win7 system HD thats not in a working PC

Hi All,

It might be a bit of a strange question. But i have been trying to get a laptop working again for a friend. And sadly i had to give it up. The MB or some internal hardware has malfunctioned and it will not start. After removing the HD and viewing it as an external HD connected to my Desktop PC I could see that there's nothing wrong with the HD. Now i want to make an image of that HD and preferably get it to work in a virtual environment so i can make some backups from that system especially the Outlook data. Most of the other things my friend wants to regain are some pictures and some documents and those i can easily backup while the HD is connected as an external drive. The Outlook stuff is another deal. Best thing to do imho is to get the system running and make a .pst file and restore it in the new laptop.

I don't include any hardware specifics since i dont think they are of any importance at this point.

So any and all suggestions how to do this are welcome!

Fonzie

Did you look into Documents\Outlook Files or AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook whether the pst files might not be there.

Your idea of running an image in a virtual system is not trivial, if not impossible.

Thnx for the reply whs. To make an usable backup of Outlook's e-mail msg's the only way i know of is to be inside that working Outlook application and export all to a .pst file and import it again in a new Laptop's Outlook. So i think looking for .pst files on the harddisk does not seem to be a plausible solution. But I will do that anyway . I am however sad to hear that running an image of a Windows partition in a virtual environment is probably not possible.
