    Can't recover my Dell laptop

Recently my Dell 1558 laptop started to act up so I decided to try formatting it using the recovery partition on it, the problem is that the bios has a password on it that I don't know. I think it was from the previous owner because I bought it refurbished.

I can't seem to run it from the recovery partition using the boot options. When I try to boot from the hard drive it just enters my operating system. I also tried booting from a Windows 7 cd, but it just sits at a black screen and then says bootmgr missing

I noticed my hard drive had a plus sign next to it in the boot options, does this mean I can expand it to choose which partition to boot? If so, how?

That is a "Studio" 1558, make sure you include the Studio on any post.

Dell used to require a call to support to reset any BIOS password. However, I have seen cases, on the Dell forum, where a Dell forum moderator would help. Suggest you repost this on the Dell forum/Laptop section to see if you can get help in resetting the BIOS password. You may have to show proof of purchase.

The reason for the required procedure was to thwart stolen laptops. Desktops have a procedure to reset the password.
