Cannot verify windows 7 backup location on ext.HD

I just cannot follow some of the threads I have seen on this subject, too complicated and do not quite cover what I want I think?I have set the windows backup several times to locate files on my 2 TB external hard drive, but I cannot see where they are and I always get a message at the end that some files were skipped?
How do I check the backup has been done? Also get that message "cannot find files" when I try to follow it up? Using Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1,64 bit OS, if that helps?
Thanks anyone if you can help this newbie with some plain explanations please?

Windows inbuilt backup has 2 types of backup
    1) user files (& some system files) - basically documents etc (NOT operating system or installed programs).
    Backup User and System Files
If your computer is called say 'Jones' then this backup will be in a folder called [Jones-PC]. Explorer will say it is empty - it is not and is full of .zip files.

    2) a full system image - basically a full snapshot of your OS partition. Includes the OS, installed programs, user data...the works. You can restore back to your current hard drive or even to a new hard drive if your current one fails.
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
    System Image Recovery
A system image is in a folder called [WindowsImageBackup]. Explorer will say it is empty - it is not.
System images are one of the most important backups you can make. An alternative and more powerful (and simple!) system imaging program is free Macrium Reflect.

Take time to read the tutorials and you should be fine.

    Thanks mjf

Hello mjf, tried to follow your instructions, much appreciate your input, but know enough about computers to muck about with all this,so I am not going to pursue it.It is just confusing & frustrating me and getting nowhere,so I'll just hope it has backed up all of it ,except those two files it listed as "skipped",and get an expert in to set it up again if I ever need it I guess. Thanks a lot anyway mjf.
