recover data from corrupted or bad sectors seagate portable hdd

    hi,

i have a seagate portable external hdd, haven't been used for 6 months, i connected now, it prompts as "scan and fix or continue without scanning". if i start scan and fix, it goes till some extent and stops and disconnects. sometimes it even prompts as ""windows cannot access the disk"". i have very important files and pictures in that hdd. so, please suggest me steps how to backup the data and send it to seagate for warranty??

    Thanks heaps,
    anvesh.

If the disk is really damaged, this may be a tough task. But you can try to recover the data with an live Linux CD or my universal data recovery stick. Linux is not as picky as Windows and maybe it would work.

What happens if you continue without scanning? If you can still see files then your filesystem is probably still in tact and obviously copy off the files you can. If you can't read anything then the ext HDD filesystem is probably corrupted and you may need to try a raw data recovery. The only free program I know for raw data recovery is Photorec.

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you ever tried it or you have just picked it up on the net and posting it on a two year old thread?

Try to use another USB port to connect to.
