    win 7 backup query

    Lenovo Thinkpad - win 7 pro 64.

I have successfully done a backup to an external HD. When it finished I checked the size and it is 1.8gb. The space use on my internal drive is 26.4 gb. My question is ..... what is actually backed up? do I need to back up my personal files/folders seperately ? Thanks

Hello arbee and welcome to Seven Forums.

It would help to know which backup utility you used (Macrium, native Windows 7, Acronis, etc.) Each backup utility has its own way of selecting what data is backed up, whether the data is compressed, and so on.

It might also help to see a screenshot of what options you have when making the backup. Perhaps there was something you should have selected (or unselected) in the backup process.

Thanks marsmimar. I think I have figured it now. I need to save as an image not just a backup.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

Don't forget to make the accompanying rescue/repair CD. In the event you need to restore an image to a new hard drive (no operating system installed) or if the existing hard drive no longer boots, the rescue/repair CD will still allow you access the image and install it. Hope you don't mind the added reminder. :)
