When I boot up Mint Mate on the computer it shows me 320gb HDD but will not mount it, says "cannot mount location" and doesn't have any information about the hard drive itself.

my brother open the terminal and execute the following commands
1. sudo
meaning super user administrator
2.fdisk -l
it will list all partitions of harddrive identify the partition that has your files it will look like /dev/...
3.mkdir media/sda1
it will make directory for mounting point
4.mount /dev/.../media/sda1
it will mount the partition /dev/... to /media/sda1 replace ... with your partition.

Thanks for trying. None of the above worked as the hard drive cannot even be found on the system. I ran TestDisk and no partitions are showing up. I am going to take the hard drive out and put it back in to make sure that it's in there tight but after that I am done. Will reinstall Windows and see if there is any way possible to get data back after formatting a drive.

what is the error you got? if it gives error click details for full description. make sure your harddrive connected properly to laptop and then enter the above commands in linux live cd terminal.the above commands will work for ubuntu may be mint. please explains the error as they appear in screen during boot in to windows as well as during mounting in live cd with the exact words you see on laptop.i am confident that the commands will work and resolve the issues if you feel uncomfortable in linux use "paragon rescue kit free edition" and boot from it you can recover data, repair windows.
