    Backup noob questions!

    N00b here. :)

    Basically i will have:-

    HDD no 1 with 1 partition;
    C:/ - Win 7 Pro x64 installed

    HDD no 2 with 2 partitions;
    D:/ - Data (files.....pictures, documents, programs i've d/l etc) around 80Gb of data
    E:/ - Recovery partition (Vista HP x64 factory recovery, as the laptop came supplied)

    If you run the win7 system image only backup and do all your HDD's and partitions can you restore individual files from that image?
    Or do you have to do the data backup of all drives and tick the system image tickbox as well and then still you can only pick from the files you chose to be backed up from under the data backup?

    If you understand that....

    Basically can i back it all up and choose what i want to re-install upon recovery eg booting from the Win7 DVD and choosing repair?

    Also i have a netbook with W7 Ultimate RC installed, trying to back up to my laptop over the network it still asks for a username and password when setting it up (OK box is greyed out otherwise) but i dont have a username or pw (single user so didnt input a pw)....what do you do in this case?

    TIA.

    Welcome to Seven Forums, duckson.

    If you do an image, you cannot pick and choose on the restore - it will save all and restore all. With backup, you can select the folders to restore.

    For the username and password issue, you need to set a password, then you can set it so that it automatically logs you on - no password screen.

    OK thanks.

    So if i want the option of picking individual files to restore in future plus having the windows partition as an image to replace that if it goes screwy i should use the data backup and tick the image creation tickbox?

    Sorry for the delay in responding.

    Yes, that is what I do. (I believe that the backup does folders, not individual files, although I haven't tried just files.)

    Every couple of weeks I re-do the whole "backup-with-image" routine, if I have changed anything.

    Not having done this yet it may be obvious but i'll ask the question anyway.

    If you do the image backup only you can pick other partitions to be included other than the OS partition which is mandatory, correct?
    Are all the other partitions you pick saved as seperate image files or do you just see one image file and when you run the restore it gives you the option of what images to restore so you dont have to restore all images if only one partition has gone wrong say?
