Why Backup user and system files fails to create system images to optical disc?

    1. Open [Backup and Restore] center
    2. Set backup settings and Select a optical disc as the location to save backup
    3. An informaion pops up, says "System images cannot be saved on this device"

Click [Guidelines for choosing a backup destination] for help, and can find "you can't save a system images on a CD or DVD"

So, my question is why we can't do it, and it is ok to create system images to optical disc from the task of [Create an image backup].

You and me both. I don't know why they did this, maybe it will be sorted in one of the newer builds.

This test result is under Win7 build 7000, can anyone offer your information under other build?

    Thank you in advance.

The Windows Backup allows only a single copy of System image on to a DVD, therefore you can't store multiple versions of System image on a DVD.
The Windows Backup settings sets the schedule for daily backup to a target. If you are selecting Image backup and the target is DVD, then daily image backups can't be taken to the DVD.
Therefore the Schedule settings allows only the file backups to a DVD, where you can keep multiple versions of file backups on a DVD.

If I remember right, it wouldn't let you create a system image with any option from backup in that build.

    Hi all

Seems to work fine for Build 7100 (RC)

I tend to use 3rd party tools for this stuff (acronis true image) but I thought I'd try for the OP.

Allows you to save to Network disks as well.

Enc screenshot -- BTW I haven't tried the RESTORE yet which I'll get round to later --after imaging my system first with Acronis that I know works.

    Cheers

    Hi all

I was just giving the OP info that it does work under 7100.

Not trying to be critical or anything -- but I'm having to work today -- I'd much rather be going out to watch some footie.

Incidentally now it's well into May I'd suggest unless he has a particular reason to stick with the 7000 Beta now would be an appropriate time to install the RC -- especially since the MS servers aren't particularly loaded anymore -- good download speeds available.

    Cheers
