How do I make and manage my own "Cloud" resource?

I'm guessing this question has been asked before yet I have searched but failed to find it/them, so here goes:

I've got three, grown up, kids who are always travelling and recording their trips with phone photos and vids as well as travelling a bit, myself and wanting to have access to large quantities of data (around 5TB).

I don't really trust other people's storage so am interested in looking at doing it myself. Equipment is not really a problem as I have plenty of hardware to hand.

How feasible is it for me to assign a server full of data as a cloud repository allowing me and the kids access to it and to add to it, remotely?

Any advice or help would be appreciated. :)

My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert at anything. :)

This little device might do the trick for you: Lima – The first Cloud that respects your privacy

You use your own drives on your own network but the data is accessible from the cloud.

    Hi,
Yep I was looking into this awhile ago as a alternative to subscription services with more disclaimers than features :)

Thanks folks. That little lot's given me something to start with.:)

But, has anyone on the site constructed their own cloud who can offer any first-hand tips and guidance?
