It would be better if you can copy your personal files to your ext hd and do a clean install as upgrade installs tend to have problems.

You cannot do an upgrade from x86 to x64. It must be a clean install. Not sure about the windows.old. I wouldn't take the chance. Back-up everything to another partition or drive. Files on other partitions or drives from the one you are installing on will not be changed. You may have to straighten out some permissions though. If so we can help with that.

    Hope this helps.

You just need to press the key at the BIOS screen that says "boot order" of something like that. It will just boot from the USB drive once. That will be very easy. If you don't have that option (some don't...not very many) you can go into the BIOS and set to boot from USB. If you have to do this....just yank the USB drive after it loads Windows files and begins to reboot for the first time. I have done it that way.

Don't forget...if you have to use the BIOS method instead of the boot order method, remember to switch it back to the original order after you install W7.

You just create the drive from the tutorial. Set the boot order to boot from USB and install like normal. It confused me too....but it's not too hard. Read up on how to change the BIOS if you don't know how. If you have a boot order option every time your computer boots, just change that...once....install and you're good to go. You may not even need to change the BIOS.
