    Backup over network

    Hi All

I tried to get this working but my Netbook wouldn't copy over and kept erroring using Windows Backup tool (sorry, don't have the error on me now!)

Basically, I have a Netbook running W7 Pro with a 16GB SSD and 16GB SDHC. I also have my laptop running W7 Pro with 2 x 250GB disks.

I would like to share D:/ (used for backups) on my laptop over the network, so that I can use Windows Backup to manually perform (not schedule) backups on my netbook. I would like the netbook to store the backup on the shared drive on the laptop, as space is very limited, I would like to be able to do this without storing any backup data on the netbooks drive.

Is this possible? What's the best way of going about this?

    Many thanks
    Scott

Hi, you should be able to, have you tested the share to make sure you can transfer file to and from it?

Just homegroup them together and then right click the drive to share it.

    Technically,
You wouldn't be backing it up since you only want one copy besides your laptop...

few ways ou can do it...

Preferely the fastest and easiest way is to get yourself a
self powered portable hard drive and/or flash drive.... they come in handy...

    or

if you still just want to keep it at home...

you would just have a share on the computer you want and map that share folder and then when you save things, instead of saving it in say the Hard Drive, you woudl save it in Z:\\shared folder.

Actually my idea would work. A self powered harddrive would work, but I think that is a little excess considering the amount of extra disk space on this other laptop. The homegroup is the easiest idea IMO. You just share a folder on your laptop and make backups of your netbook to there from the netbook.

Sharing a folder and saving things is essentially what I suggested. Homegroup and share the folder......

    Redundancy....

    Hi All,

Cheers for the help. I had previously tried to do what surfasb suggested but for some reason it wouldn't copy. I've just tried again and it's fine, although I had to back up to a network share as it wouldn't see the mapped drive, but that's fine. I also had to disconnect the mapped drive as otherwise it said there were too many connections when attempting to back up.

Now the C: drive and users files are backing up OK on the netbook, I'm using SyncToy to back up the SDHC card, which is also working fine using the network share, although it might take a while as I have many small <1kb files on it, due to the software which is installed. At least it will be backed up OK.

acurasd, technically it will be backed up, as my laptop never leaves the house but the netbook does, which is where it's more likely to be damaged. I know it would all be lost in a fire or similar, but hey, I'll have more important things to worry about then. On that thought, maybe it would be good to invest in some online backup storage, although I don't particularly want to send hundreds of Gb's of data across my broadband connection, lol.

    Thanks all!
