Can you permanently save a good restore point

I have created a restore point, everything works fine. Now I want to know if I can save this permanently in a drive. I don't want it to be cleaned out when I do a disk cleanup.

    Please help. Thanks!!

    Hello Dinomon,

Sorry, but no. A restore point will only stay stored until the storage space runs out, then the older restore points are deleted to make room for the new ones.

You can create a system image backup though, and keep it permanently in case you need to do a system image recovery with it.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Hi dino,

You would be better off making an image of where you are now - you can restore that if needed.

There are a couple of great free programs you can use.

This one is only free for a limited time - it was supposed to have ended already - luckily it is still available - but not for much longer - so be quick:

Paragon Backup & Recovery Compact Free registration

    Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Compact [32-bit]

    Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Compact [64-bit]

If you miss that , this is always available free:

    Backup & Recovery 10 Free

    B&R10 Free Registration

Another good one - not as many features as the Paragon apps. - but can go very fast.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Does a restore point just save the registry settings? or is there more to it?

You could export the registry and merge it if you needed.....would this work for a simple "system settings" restore point?

+1 A restored image is by far a better option than a restore point... I have disabled System Restore altogether!!

As some of the above posters have mentioned, you can have an image on a separate hard drive and use it if ever necessary. If you use system restore, it will make restore points on a regular basis. If you have a minor problem that and you prefer not to use the image (maybe you were negligent and did not keep it up to date) you could use the restore point.

Shadow copy is work of genius - absolutely everything is in there. Unfortunately , system restore only restores part of it - not always the parts you want.

Hit and miss as to whether it actually works.
