Backup and Restore problems

I've used the native image backup successfully a few times. Most recently on two different systems where the SSD system disk needed a firmware update. Made the image, ran the update utility, booted off the emergency repair disk, and ran the image back on the SSD. Very easy, very fast.

However, it seems that ever since then I've been able to make images (for routine backup purposes) but on testing them, the Backup and Restore utility has failed to find the image 100% of the time.

Also, I wanted to use B&R to make an image for migration from a mechanical disk to a new SSD on a third system. I made two images on two removable USB HDDs (NTFS format, no known problems). Both completed without an error. Yet when I wanted to run the image back onto the raw SSD, the Emergency Repair Restore Utility refused to recognize either one of them. It simply insisted that it couldn't find an image, even though there was no question that both removable drives had good ones on them.

A few minutes ago, as an experiment, I made a brand new image of another system to one of these removable drives. Again it completed without an error, and again, on trying an experimental restore from it, the B&R utility refused to find it, literally five minutes after it was created.

Needless to say, I'm rapidly losing confidence in this utility!! At the very least, you'd think they'd provide a "browse" function for finding an image manually, but no such luck. At this point, I have 0.000 confidence that should I need to use one of these in the event of a disk failure, they'd do what I need them to do.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

BTW, all of these systems that are acting up have SSDs in them. That means that Superfetch, Prefetch, Indexing, and a couple of other unnecessary services are turned off. I don't see a relationship of any of these to B&R, but who knows? Regardless, even this can't explain why the Emergency Repair Disk can't find the images either.
