Win 7 Enterprise Network Backup to Mac OSX

    Here's my situation:

I have a PC running Windows 7 Enterprise (64bit). I have a Mac running OSX with an external HDD formatted for Mac Extended (Journaled).

I have music and I want to prevent a significant digital copy loss. It has happened in the past, and I want to start backing it up on a weekly or monthly basis.

I was trying to back the music up by plugging it directly into my Windows PC (using MacDrive 8), but the transfers kept failing. So, I resorted to backing up through the network to the Mac with the external connected to it, and it is going smoothly (but painfully slower than via Firewire). Now that I have all the music backed up, I want to schedule a program to back it up automatically through the network to the external HDD connected to the Mac.

I tried to do it using Windows Backup. Typed in the address to the "Save on a network..." -- I also browsed and selected a folder that way.

    \\Dereks-mac\derek's\Music Backup\

and I type in my credentials and hit OK. I get this error:

The specified network location cannot be used

Verify the path points to a correct network location and that the supplied credentials can be used for write access to the folder.

I click "More details" and it tells me:

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. (0x8007052E)

I have the right login and password. Retyped it many times, still to no avail. I should note that I am fully able to transfer files to this same computer with this same external HDD and identical credentials. Do I have the wrong syntax or something for the network path? I mean I tried by browsing for the folder as well. Is it not possible through Windows Backup?

Are there any other programs that might be able to save my music files over a network from a Win 7 PC to an Apple Mac OSX?

This probably isn't what you're looking for but home sharing on iTunes may do what you want.

This tutorial tells you how to gain access to your Mac from your PC. How to access mac files from windows (Snow Leopard & Windows 7) - Network | Mac Hack PC - Hack it all you can...

Once you've got access, it may be worth trying Windows Backup again.

Out of curiosity are you looking to do incremental backups or a full backup every time?

Just as general warning to you, network backup reliability is very low; from my own expierience it often fails and is very slow.

If you need anymore help or have any more questions please ask.

I'm looking for incremental backups. So, only a few albums a week shouldn't take longer than 2 minutes to transfer over the network.

I actually found SyncToy and it works very well. Does anyone know how to schedule backups with SyncToy?

try adding a workgroup name to your username

As an aside, I tried this adding "workgroup/<username>" to the username of the mac user, and it worked fine.

    ie. mac user = aussie
Entered into dialog on windows = workgroup/aussie

I suspect this is a side effect of the way that OS X does file sharing, as it uses the default "WORKGROUP" for the workgroup / domain name (unless you manually change it)

You may want to try that!
