System Restore doesn't work
My Win 7 was installed in February 2010 and at first I could use System Restore without problems. However, after some time it stopped working due to unknown reasons and now when I try to do a System Restore it looks as if it is going to be OK, but when it restarts I see the following error message:
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800703f1)
You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?
I tried to fix it by doing the following things:
1) Perform SFC /SCANNOW
it returns the following message:
and nothing gets better regarding System Restore.Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
2) Do System Restore from Safe Mode:
This doesn't help at all, i.e. it returns the same message as always. "Repair Windows Install" option does not help either.
3) I tried to uninstall my antivirus program (Avira Antivir) because I read somewhere that antivirus programs can cause this error with system restore. Unfortunately it didn't help.
Does someone have an idea what I can do to enable System Restore again on my Win 7? I have a rather unpleasant problem with media files described in this thread and I'd hate to have to do a clean install of Windows 7 because of it alone.
All suggestions and help are welcome.
