Please, I'm begging you. Don't mess with it. If it works be happy. It could be absolutely anything.

My driver comment was a wild guess. I actually have no idea. Yes I have known drivers to become corrupted and a System Restore fixed it. However I can't say for definite that is what caused it
If I had not restored it, would there be a way to find out? Sorry, I am a geek.

What is it they say? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Yes i suppose with alot of work it could have been diagnosed. to be honest though if it had turned out to be a modem error the first thing i would have done is a system restore anyway. If you REALLY want to find out then by all means undo the restore (same way you did it in the first place just click "undo the last restore operation") However I am making an official Recommendation not to.

firstly you might not be able to restore it again.
secondly, Hardware issues are remarkably difficult to track down.

I guess I will go with 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

So you would not have power cycled the modem and did the release/renew?

Sorry I should have been clearer there. Once i had narrowed it down to a HARDWARE issue, and not just a connection issue (which is what power cycling and release/renew would have established) I would have done the restore

If that had failed I would have moved on to fiddling with drivers. and then after that i would have junked the modem
