How to retrieve whole disk backup data.

My wifes computer needed to go and i did a whole disk backup as i thought that it was a regular image. Unfortunately it is not.

I can mount the image file without a problem and i have access to some of the folders that were on the desktop. 95% of the data is locked inside the 4234242-234897342-2348274 etc... files.

How can i access the data in those files?

I cannot have put the system on the new computer because it was 64b and the new computer is 32. I tried to install a windows 7 32bits but it's not working he doesn't see the backup. i tried every soft i can think of and can't open those files....

i searched here and couldn't find anything so if anyone has an idea....

Choose the 64 bit version. Burn it to a disc.

you can run it from the disc and it is 64 bit.

Is the new computer limited by hardware to 32x? or just the OS installed?

new computer unfortunately.... i tried to put it on another computer that is 64bits but it is a d430 with a zif hard drive and the dump is not working. i tried to get it on a virtual machine but it is not working either.

Just to be clear....i want to extract the data from a windows 7 whole system image.

Vista x64 / 7 X64

Can you get the image onto a working pc with win 7?

Just copy the vhd file .

On the working pc, open disk management, click Action>Attach VHD - browse to it - it will mount and you can copy files off it, just like any other drive.

The problem you have may be a ntfs permissions issue.

If you copy the folders off the mounted vhd onto another partition. - you may then be able to open them from their new location.

The problem is not the vhd which i can use. The problem is that the whole disk backup is NOT a real image. It is a patchwork of restore points for 90% of the data and some "regular" data. I want to be able to open the restore point part of the backup.
