If you're gonna install a new AntiVirus, I'd recommend Avast! Home Edition. It's free and rarely misses anything.

I run Norton Security 2010 and haven't had any issues at all with it so far under 7 64bit.
Although it could possibly be the culprit in the OP's case.
I did have a similar issue with Firefox however, where killing the firefox.exe in process explorer resolved the issue and it would open again.
After a bit of reasearch I found what was causing it. The build of Firefox at that time was somehow conflicting with MeGUI (or x264)
For some reason, if I was encoding a video, and using Firefox at the same time, the Firefox process could hang.
This was a rare occurance, but would periodically happen non-the-less.
This seemed to be a confict with that particualr build of Firefox.
With the latest update from Firefox, the issue has been resolved and I havent seen it since.
While this very well may not be the case for you, I just wonder if perhaps something similar is happening?
Just thought I'd share my experience in hopes it may help find the issue the OP is having, although it may be completely different.
i never had issue after resuming from sleep however. mine was somewhat rare and random. And had to be running both programs side by side to reproduce it.
I've had the same problem recently using FF v3.5.5 and v3.5.6, in both XP and W7 and there have been several similar reports on the Mozilla forums. If I needed to restart FF the only way was to kill the exe from within Task manager. After trying several alternative methods I found the only way to solve the problem was to do a complete and clean re-install :
a) backup your bookmarks and passwords using Xmarks add-on
b) backup your complete FF User Application and Program folders to another location - preferably another disk
b) un-install FF
c) completely delete both the FF User Application and any remaining FF Program folder
d) re-install FF - this will give you a clean installation and a new profile
You can then either copy your user data from your old profile to your new profile or - as I have done - reinstall your add-ons from scratch and only copy from your old profile data which is personal to you and not backed up elsewhere. Make sure you don't delete copies of the original folders until you're sure you've got everything back to how you want it. Use Xmarks to re-install your bookmarks and passwords.
The above might sound drastic but it's the only way to get an assured solution. I still don't know if it's a native FF problem, a corrupt profile, an addon or plugin issue, or some conflict with FF and Windows OS.
