***PLEASE help: new hotmail and messenger

    Hi.

Today, my Hotmail account got upgraded and the entire hotmail page looks different from the previous one. It has more features and one of the feature is the AUTOMATIC Messenger log in.

When I got to hotmail.com and log in, it logs in my Messenger account automatically in the same tab. The new feature embeds the messenger into the hotmail.com website!!!

Because of this it logs in to my messenger EVERY TIME i check my email, and I dont want this to happen.

I've tried everything in the options and tried deleting Windows Live Messenger altogether. It did nothing because the messenger is EMBEDDED in the firefox page!

Does anyone know how to fix this??? Thank you so much!!!

Hello yalemd Welcome to the Seven Forums!

This is easily fixed by first browsing near the top of the contacts list screen and clicking on the show menu bar option to make that visible. From there open the "menu bar>Tools>Options>sign in" item found in the left column of options. Simply uncheck the automatic sign in box as well as automatic login when Windows starts and even uncheck the "show Today screen" annoyance to solve that one fast.

The image here shows how those look once unchecked for a good reference in dealing with this since in the event Windows or just WLM is reinstalled again at some point you will be doing this all over again! Been there enough times!

Hi there thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, I've already done that and that is really not my issue

My issue does not deal with the Windows Live Messenger, but because of the web messenger in hotmail.com

Please look at the image attached where the red arrow is. When i type hotmail.com and enter my password, the web messenger starts logging in automatically (as you can see near the red arrow on top right hand side). I have spent hours trying to not let it sign in automatically, but it still does.

Even if i put "appear offline," it goes back to "online" when I close my firefox and log in again... When I click on "sign out of messenger" it is only temporary and it automatically logs in when i reopen hotmail.com. (Also this happens in BOTH IE8 and the newest FF)

Thanks so much for your help!!!!!!!!!!

When entering into any Live page such as the inbox Messenger will start up to the point where you can sign in or close it out. This is to be expected with every WL type page since some pages will automatically require a Windows Live id. IE when on TechNet or connect will see this as well as when going into the Live Hotmai site.

The option for seeing WLM start when an IE requires it can be unchecked there but may hamper your normal login. That option is found in the Security tab when looking back at the image posted and scrolling down. The last item seen at the bottom when you have that open will be the "Open Windows Live Messenger when I click a link on a webpage..... blah blah balh" you can disable.

I suspect he may not be using WLM or any other mail application. Hotmail can be used through the browser w/o an email program.

The new hotmail is mainly the Live Hotmail now seen with the option of hotmail or live in the email address you set up. some at live or someone at hotmail when seeing a new Live id created.

You still need a Windows Live id however to log in and download the main installation files in order to install and use the Live Messenger since the rest is already online. The files installed are for the options like movie maker, photo sharing, etc. there not an actual on the drive email client like Windows Mail or Outlook.

When signing in while you have an IE window open that gets signed too. Messenger becomes active without being signed in however when going to the online inbox or certain MS sites where the Live id is required there. If not planning to go to one of those sites you simply uncheck the open WLM item so it won't start on you.

How can you uncheck something in WLM if WLM was not downloaded and installed? I got the impression he is using Windows Live Hotmail not Windows Live Mail. In the Windows Live Essentials list of available programs, it looks like he only downloaded "Messenger" not "Mail".

Each Live Essentials items is seen listed on one main screen when first signing up and selecting what will be downloaded and installed locally on the drive. The two images here show Messenger as a separate item while you still need to see an address for any email account and the Live id address(online account) entered in order to use the messenger service.

Yes, you must have a Live ID to have Messenger but you don't need to have WLM. WLM is the downloadable "Mail" application. Hotmail is web based email for which you need a Live ID only. So I think one can have a Live ID, a downloadable Messenger, and web based Hotmail, all without WLM.

As far as the mail part of all that when checking off the items to see installed you still have to go into "Start>All Programs>Windows Live" and click on the item there to bring up the configuration wizard as you can see in the image here.

Your present one or more WL id(s) will be found in the first item's dropdown list there when selecting the address you intend to import mail from. It works as well as WMail or OE or even TBird for grabbing mail from your inbox. But you need to check the mail item off when going to download any of the Live Essentials or go back to the download page to add more.
