Windows 7: Programs\WinMail folder

Programs\WinMail folder

I thought there was no mail software in Win 7, but there is a Windows Mail folder that contains winmail.exe under Programs on my Pro X64 system.

When I run winmail.exe it starts and shows up in Task Manager but nothing else happens. What is it for, why is it there?

Just curious.

I discovered this while playing with Brink's tutorial: Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

I found a bit of info on it but nothing really informative.

Its currently there for stuff that is build utilizing the DLLs and binaries that Windows Mail provided in Windows Vista. If you have no software that utilizes it then its never touched.

Hello Rich,

The WinMail.exe file is technically still in Windows 7, but you have to do a few things below first before it will work. However, since Windows Mail is no longer being supported, you would be better off with another email client program like Windows Live Mail instead.

Thanks all. I don't want to use it, just wanted to know why it was there. I use the SeaMonkey suite for E-mail and web browser.

Interesting that you can still use it though.

Not sure why MS left it there either.
