Always open IE 8 in a size of your choice.

Way back in the dark ages of XP to get IE to open to nearly full screen every time instead of the smaller dfault size I used the Drag the sides method rather the the maximise button. This worked OK in XP but not in Win 7 running IE 8. Very frustrating!
The answer is to set your size by dragging then hold down the Alt key and press the "X" close button. Next time you open that link it will open the the size it was when you closed it!
If you want it to happen in all windows of IE 8 then in IE 8 click Tools, Internet Options, Go down to Tabs click Settings and check the button "Always open Pop up in a new window" and below that "A new tab in the current window"
Hope some may find that useful!

I'm sure that will be very useful to IE8 users! I've always had a hard time getting any program to remember my size/location prefs for the window.

Here I found to use on all versions of Windows namely the "iemaximizer.exe" freeware utility. jiiSoft :: IE New Window Maximizer

This works on the 64bit as well as 32bit Windows XP, Vista, 7 and previous versions of IE 6, 7. and even the 64bit IE 8. You can opt to have it start with Windows and hidden in the system tray as well as starting it up manually each time you go to use it.

It also can be set for full screen for both IE and OE or Windows Mail while I would advise against that option for most if you decide to try it out. I got sick of clicking the maximize button for every new window a few years back for opening second windows from links and came across this one.

Check out the solutions in this thread: open ie8 maximized and substitute "maximize" for "a size of your choice".

Popup windows won't remember that. For each new hitting the maximize button was the task since those will often open in small windows especially if the popup blocked option isn't checked off.

Meanwhile the open and drag to desired size and closed up method is useful for Windows Explorer. When pressing the Windows buton and E key that will see a new WE window open to the same size the last was closed at.
