Please dont jump all over me for posting this. I was working thru tutorials and came to the one about installing Windows Mail in W7. There are 83 pages of messages accompanying a very clearly written tutorial. It looks to me like M'soft changed some stuff in mid-stream.

I have W7 Home Premium, and hate Windows Live Mail. Can someone give me the Cliff notes of what has changed/needs to be done to follow the tutorial steps please?

Thank you,
Dick

Welcome Dick

No, I do not have the answer to your question, but why go through all that trouble to wind up with a email client that is not even supported by MS.

There are so many good, free ones out there.

Richc46:
Thanks for your response. Sorry I'm not a tech. guru, so I have to ask this basic question:
If I went with Thunderbird do I wind up accessing Hotmail thru Thunderbird or is T'Bird a separate
email client (meaning, I guess that I'd have to re-setup contacts etc.)?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this,
Dick

If Hot Mail permits POP3 access (use of a client) you can use hot mail. That being said, you would have to set up everything manually. It is easy to do and I would be happy to help.
There may be a way to import the information to Thunderbird, but I am not sure. I am very happy with Windows Live Mail and did not look into alternatives.

Hi Dick,
Have you posted for help over in the tutorial of Windows Mail? Poppa Bear, ExBritt and roncerr are very in the know on Windows Mail. I guess I was one of the last hold outs on Windows Live Mail because like you, I didn't like it but I made the jump a couple of months ago. I'm glad I did because now I have it set up where I see very little difference in WLM and WinMail. I am very happy with WLM!

I agree with Greg S. However to answer your question, the tutorial has been kept up to date so it should still work as written. That's not to say they're won't be any unsolved quirks. But I should mention that Poppa Bear (who wrote the tutorial) and I both used WM on Windows 7 for a brief period and then decided to give WLM a real try. Currently we're both still using WLM. WLM has many features that get in the way of letting you use it as WM but it can be done. Of course WLM has a few quirks of its own, but they may be solved eventually since MS is actively working on it.

Thank you roncerr, Greg S, and richc46 for your helpful responses.
Maybe I'm just confused, as usual. I used to use Hotmail; then M'Soft
migrated to WLM. In my opinion they're trying to make it part of a more
"social", "conversational" experience with all the otherparts of Windows Live.

What I would really like to be able to have is a free email client that's on my desktop and would be able to import all my current WLM contacts, adresses etc.

Would Windows Mail be such a creature?

Thanks,
Dick

1) Hotmail (web based) is still available...it's just sometimes called "Windows Live Hotmail" (not a desktop program).

2) WM and WLM are both desktop clients. WLM is the replacement for WM, however due to it's added "features" it's hard to see the built-in WM functionality, hence the unofficial tutorial to restore WM on Windows 7: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail.html

Both hotmail & gmail can be set up to come thru thunderbird. In fact thunderbird sets it up for you once you have entered your email address.
