question about outlook and email security

So basically I have outlook 2003 linked to my Gmail. So when I write a new email and hit send this is not secured going to gmail's servers, but once it's there it's secure, but when it gets sent to the destination email it's unsecure again. The only way to secure is all party's must have a security certificate like verisign? Is this correct? So essentially most emails are unsecured during transit over the internet? And if this is the case couldn't some evil doer just intercept emails left and right and try to get any personal info. Or is there more to email security. Like when you register usernames and passwords at a bank or internet forum doesn't that just get sent via email for confirmation unsecured over the internet.

So basically my personal email there is no practical way to truly secure my email. Encryption costs money. Plus the recipients must have the same brand of encryption software to decrypt my sent email correct? Most emails I receive are business correspondence with jobs or internet purchase receipts. So even if I had encryption email sent to me from them isn't secured right?

regarding your info, you work and business, is it a company?? all the email is send under internet? if wanna be secure.more secure is intranet under the company. so the company have a mail server. but if use the provider email, that's email unsecure, but at least you have to encrypt and using password on it. so when receipt they ask the pass for open the email. that's for least the hack.

Yes and bottom line, the only email that you should send is the type that says "How was your vacation". Never passwords, bank accounts or other sensitive information.

Certain websites are secure, however, for example, when you give your credit card number etc.to make a purchase from a reputable dealer.

You can tell, the address begins with https, in the addess bar, rather than http.

Correct I'm using either gmail or yahoo. My jobs internal mail is all encrypted I assume, but I don't use that to conduct personal business. Just to communicate with the relevant people at work. I don't VPN into them since I have no need to. My questions pertain to my own email through internet. I am using outlook to link to my gmail accounts. I was mainly concerned about security between outlook and gmail.

Not secure, as in the link that I sent you.
Email is only secure when the address bar shows https, or sent encrypted.

That requires purchasing a certificate doesn't it? Obviously I'll just avoid sending anything that is very sensitive in nature to me.
